Mentor Program
VRC utilizes mentors to assist veterans with their transition to civilian life. These volunteers offer their professional experience in a practical way for the benefit of the veterans. They provide useful advice regarding their own experience and expertise, give realistic advice about breaking into a profession or trade and suggest ways for applicants to develop their careers.
The role of the mentor itself depends on the needs of the applicant and the ability and experience of each mentor. In some cases, relationships last for just one question such as "what is it really like being an accountant?" or for many years even after the initial reason for contact was made
Qualities of a Mentor:- A positive role model
- Strong listening skills
- Confident in sharing his/her own work experiences
- Comfortable giving advice
- Can offer career/job options and suggestions
- Good encourager/motivator
These mentors are not professional advisors, merely a practical resource for those seeking to find answers about a chosen career or profession.
Please note: This network will help recent veterans to find out more about the realities of certain jobs, sectors and careers, but it is NOT a jobs service.
